Five minutes, start to finish, on any Fire TV Stick. The one part that trips people up is a menu Amazon moved, so that is covered explicitly below.
This page is the short version. The full Firestick guide goes further on troubleshooting.
1. Allow the install
From the home screen: Settings → My Fire TV → Developer options, then turn on Install unknown apps for Downloader.
On newer Fire OS builds that menu is hidden. To bring it back, open Settings → My Fire TV → About and click the device name seven times. Developer options then appears one level up.
2. Install the player
Check the Amazon Appstore first — if the app is listed for your region, that is the cleanest route and updates handle themselves. Otherwise install Downloader from the Appstore and use it to fetch the player.
3. Sign in once
Open the player and enter the server URL, username and password from your welcome email. The channel list and EPG populate on their own. Give it a minute — on a first launch the guide is pulling a full week of listings.
Two settings that stop the stuttering
The Firestick has less RAM and a weaker Wi-Fi antenna than most phones, which is why it is the first device in the house to show a marginal connection.
Use the 5 GHz band. In network settings, pick the 5 GHz name rather than 2.4 GHz if your router offers both. It is the single biggest improvement available on a Firestick.
Clear the cache, not the data. Settings, Applications, Manage Installed Applications, the player, Clear cache. Clearing data wipes your login instead.
Which Firestick
The 4K Max has the fastest processor and Wi-Fi 6, and it is the one to buy if you are buying. The standard 4K model handles most 4K streams perfectly well. The Lite does not output 4K at all, so set the player to HD on that model and you will get a better picture than forcing it.
Worth testing on your own stick before you pay: the 24-hour trial takes no card, and a live match is the honest test.
